It’s always impressive to reflect on how one accent piece can help guide the selections process for an entire room. Take this master bathroom that CG&S recently completed in Barton Hills for example. Our clients had a set of antique Moroccan doors that had been waiting for an opportunity to find an operational role in their home, which the renovation provided. Once the doors were incorporated into the design, it provided a reference point from which all the other finishes were derived. Here’s what our clients had to say about the process and where they sourced their local finishes:

We’ve had the Moroccan doors for ten years! There was a dealer in town with a wonderful old building filled with Moroccan objects, doors, rugs, lamps, vases… I remember that he had a Moroccan father and a Norwegian mother—and had decided to move to Norway. Everything had to go! When we bought the doors, we had no idea where we’d use them. For many years, they sat at the top of a small landing. When our son was small, his buddies thought there was a secret room behind the magical blue doors! Once it occurred to us that the doors were just the right size for a linen cupboard, everything fell into place. Our love of blues, greens, teal and turquoise work with the doors, and my quirky collection of pottery plays nicely with the beautiful moody grey-green quartz we found at Moe’s [Moefried Marble & Granite]. We wanted to find tiles with a Moroccan feel, without making the bathroom look like a stage set. The lovely handmade Mexican tiles we used came from Clay Imports on North Lamarand we were told that our order was among the very last to be made (in our color choice and size) by a small maker in Mexico. Lucky! The perfect grey floor tiles were discovered on a shopping trip with Mark Evans.

The 1920’s gold-framed mirror came from an antiques dealer in Pennsylvania. I love its age and imperfections next to the clean, modern tubular lights from Lights Fantastic. It’s the perfect size for two people to share and, I think, balances nicely with the trough sink underneath. And we love the trough sink! Great look and very practical! The big, deep tub—we found with the sink at Ferguson’sis fantastic!

Many of the objects and pieces of furniture we used in the bedroom sitting area have been with us for a while and have been given new life. My reading chair—now reupholstered in a beautiful blue velvet by The Upholstery Shop on South Lamar—has been with us in two other houses. The huge hand-painted trunk was my childhood toy chest back in Wisconsin!
